Conway Main Street on the Importance of Historic Conway

The downtown historic district is a special place, for it's the heart and soul of Conway, and it's where the city's personality is defined. Founded in 1773, historic Conway is located along the lazy Waccamaw River, and some of the homes are nearing their 200th birthdays. The great live oak trees can barely remember when they were that young. You may find the downtown's memories gracing local calendars or depicted on your local bank card.

This city is where we bring our family and friends when they visit. We peruse the shops, walk along the river, and remember our past. Conway is alive with parades, festivals, and our heritage. Walking tours highlight historical features such as City Hall, built in 1825 by Robert Mills who designed the Washington Monument. Downtown has the arts to lift our spirits and bring us beauty, from the Main Street Theater to five talented local artists.

Historic Conway brings neighbors together. When you walk into Conway stores, you know you're speaking to an owner. You can feel that special service in every smile, every purchase, and every visit. Not only are unique shops where you can buy one-of-a-kind treasures for loved ones, but downtown shops are owned by a rich mix of friendly people. We know them by name, we see them at church, and we see them at school. In the downtown, everyone is a neighbor, from the moment you enter a store to the moment you leave.

Supporting downtown Conway is not just something we do, but something that we enjoy. When you have been downtown a few times, and you get to know the people behind the counters, the heritage, and the history, you realize that, though we strive to support downtown Conway, in reality, it supports us.
